Patrolling the North Sea by Panzerfire Patrolling the North Sea by Panzerfire
Commision from :iconlamnay:

A German Navy pilot contemplates her BAE Sea Harrier FA2 jumpjet before a patrol mission in the North Sea.

This one, I'm very happy about. It came out pretty good I think.

The background sky and sea were pretty painful to make and I still quite failed to get what I was aiming for in the beggining. Gotta practice more in that area. I made a couple of mistakes with the Harrier, the first and probably an obvious for the military geeks is the presence of the ALARM anti-radiation missile in what would be a routine patrol mission (In which case the aircraft oughta be carrying a couple of AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles). The second mistake is a slighty perspective error in the aircraft's possition. Although it's only noticeable if you really really take a good look at it.

And before everyone tries to kill me about it...

YES! I know the German Navy does not have neither an Aircraft Carrier nor any Harrier jumpjet variant. It's a "what if" or an alternative history scenario.

The aircraft carrier deck is based on the deck of the Príncipe de Asturias (R-11) aircraft carrier of the Spanish Navy which is able to launch and recover the Harrier family of jets.

Well, I hope you guys like it. :)

See'ya in the Battlefield! :salute:

I've heard a few rumors that Germany is looking into a Carrier, maybe buying an older one from an allie or startig from scratch.

That would be news if the rumors had a pynch of credibility. The current administration in the German government is highly skeptical of military interventionism and all military reforms undertaken as of late have been about mainly reducing military personnel, equipment and facilities.

Trust me, an aircraft carrier is not even being dreamed about by the current government. And I think that if such plans were to be had, there would be a massive public backlash against such plans. It's simply not going to happen.

Your art is actually among the more imaginative and in synch with my own tastes around. I wish you did more. ^^

CnC is a very cool game series. But Generals is probably among my very favourites. A great part of my childhood. You can have a taste of Rise of the Reds in here: [link] :)

This is what I like about speculative fiction: you can tell reality to die in a fire.

In a fictional setting, the German Navy would be able to acquire a Harrier carrier. Nobody can tell you that it's wrong because it doesn't have to follow reality in the first place.

I wonder, will the German Navy ever consider getting a VTOL Carrier? I know they used to have a rather large Naval Air Arm up until the 1970s. They even had F-104s in it I believe. I'm surprised they don't have one right now. Plus, I think the Military Capacity cap at 270,000 for the Bundeswehr is ridiculous. It's not like one day the Germans will wake up and say "Let's invade France/Poland/Russia/whatever again!" Plus, unless Germany somehow gets involved in some big war somewhere, the Bundeswehr will never even reach 270,000 members.

Ok. What I think is vented out now. Good.

Actually the German Navy still has a naval air wing. They even had a significant fighter force composed of Tornado fighters well into the 2000s. However nowadays it's mostly composed of helicopters and aircraft designed for ASW.

Speaking realistically, it's highly unlikely that Germany would ever get an aircraft carrier of any type. The budget required for that kind of development is simply not there. And it would be a political nightmare for the government. And I'm not saying that because of the foreign pressure that would result from announcing such plans (Which would be inmense) but also because most of the German people would not agree that an aircraft carrier of any type or size would be needed at all. Most Germans today are very anti-militaristic and are not keen of any actions or developments that may give the military too much power.

Ah good point. Then again, Japan has an article in it's constitution banning war, and yet they have 2 Helicopter Carriers that are classified as Helicopter Destroyers. They even have plans to put F-35Bs in the future. Still, highly unlikely as you said. Well, I'm writing my own WW3 story that is a Hetalia fanfic that is sort of based on current events. In it, Germany joins in as one of the Allies, completely abandons the Bundeswehr Capacity Cap, and by the War's end, has a Navy of 400 Ships, An Air Force of over 20,000 Aircraft, and it still pales in comparison to other Allied Militaries. The US has over 2,000 Ships and 200,000 Aircraft by the War's end. Try and guess who starts it. I'll give you a hint, it's one of the countries in your signature. Specifically, one that is located near Japan and South Korea. In fact, all of them fight together against the Allies along with Cuba, Ecuador, Bolivia, Nicaragua, Zimbabwe, and Angola. The Allies are basically the rest of the world. Somehow, the Anti-Allies manage to hold off from 2013 to 2041.

Well, finally, anyways, do you know what Hetalia is? It is very interesting. If you don't know what it is, go look up the episodes. They're hilarious.

Haaaaaa, sorry man. I do know what Hetalia is but I'm afraid I'm not the least entertained by it. I rather prefer the SATW comics from Humon.

Nice one putting out the sky colors and the whole scene :)

And I like the pilot suit too, looks so detailed. Do you still use vectors from YSflight for the airplane?

Anyway, good job. Keep it up.

Thank you.

Yes I still make vectors using screenies from YSF.

'Though I am considering making a new attempt at drawing them myself by hand.

Or switching to using photos from airliners.net for greater accuracy 'though I fear that doing so could seriously put me in the position in which I could be sued, specially if I do so while working on a commision. @_@

And I'm glad you like the sky work. I did it like three times before I got it more or less right. It's still not quite what I had planned so I'm a little dissapointed with myself. Maybe in the future I can get better at doing skies. :)

Not typical of current naming traditions of the German Navy. ;) Today the German navy gives their ships names from localities and geographical points.

Just curious - if Germany would have an aircraft carrier of any sort, what name would it have?

Well, this was a commision from :iconlamnay: so you should ask him what the carrier would be named.

Personally I think that if a small aircraft carrier was to be put in service, it would carry the name of a german city or federal state as it is the norm in the modern day Bundesmarine. However it could also carry the name of an important historical figure.

Just curious Panzerfire but what kind of pilot's uniform and types of kit did you use as a reference for her?

Well, the flightsuit itself is slighty based on a picture of a german pilot with a typical Modern Luftwaffe flightsuit. The color is also the same, although I've seen other photos of german pilots with more grey, olive green flightsuits.

The other gear however is made up since I didn't have the reference for it at the time of drawing. And I got lazy to do the research.

Really digging the colouring on this one: it has something very nicely photorealistic, and the warm tones make it for a beautiful sunshine - only made better by the presence of an aircraft carrier and a jumpjet, obviously :D

It's a Sea Harrier FA2, it's fairly old. Although it's still used I think by the Indian Air Force/Navy (Not the FA2 version but another Sea Harrier version).

Thanks.
