Description

"Medved 3 is down! I repeat, Medved 3 is down!" said the commander of the platoon to the rest of the unit.
"That idiot forgot to turn on the curtain..." he added. Driver and gunner were too busy to take notice as they had just dodged a bullet themselves.

"Got visual on those assholes?" asked the commander to his gunner. "Da! They're reloading their TOWs!" he replied.
"Don't let them! FIRE!"

Back with another picture to share with you guys. Here we see two Russian-made T-90As as part of a larger armored force being ambushed by a number of ATGM emplacements equiped with the US-made BGM-71 TOW. As you can see in the background, the other other T-90A took a hit and his ammo rack detonated inmediately. The one in the foreground managed to jam the aiming of another TOW missile thanks to it's Shtora-1 softkill Active Protection System.

The wars in Iraq and specially the Syrian Civil War have proven that even some of the best main battle tanks of the world are extremely vulnerable to longe-range anti-tank guided missiles. The role of the tank in the modern battlefield has become clouded because of the relative high availability of ATGM systems among insurgent forces. The Russians have long since begun to install APS on their tanks since the Cold War and the T-90 is not the exception. It's Shtora-1 APS is designed to "dazzle" incoming optical tracked guided missiles and make them miss their target. Other russian APS introduced in later tanks like the T-90M or the T-14 are designed to properly intercept the missile mid-air to reduce potential penetration or damage to the tank.

Done in about a week I have to say I am rather pleased with the time I invested in this. 'Though I still need to work more on that aspect of my work. I did initially start this project as a 1st in a series of fanart images for the game Armored Warfare, developed by Obsidian Entertainment and published by My.com. But then as I was working on this picture in the computer, this happened: aw.my.com/us/news/general/myco…
I don't want to dwell too much into the current shitstorm the game just landed itself into but to keep it short, it looks like AW may not last for long because a huge chunk of the non-russian playerbase (Which was already very low before the announcement) has decided to call it quits with the game for good in protest of the developer switch. I will write a journal later on this topic in a few days when the game publishers decide to comment a bit on the future of the game... if there's any. Man I even made a clean and large shaped version of the AW logo for this picture which I had to remove. :hmm:

I may still proper AW fanart in the future but that depends on whether the game survives the transition. Next few works should be commisions! :D I will be writing the announcement later today so stay tuned for a journal on that if you're interested.

I will reply to all your comments in the next few days. Hope you guys like this.

I'll see you in the Battlefield! :salute:

I'm sure someone else already pointed this out but if not, allow me to be the first. Shtora cannot jam a TOW ATGM because TOW (98% of all models of it) are wire guided. The communication via wire cannot be jammed as its a direct input feed. Therefore Shtora would be entirely useless here. The T-90's laser dazzler would probably been more effective as it could temporarily blind the TOW gunner, assuming they could aim it on the TOW's position and hit the sighting system.
